A Message From Doctor Sarah, Owner & Founder of Balance Within - Integrative Physical Therapy and Women's Health Expert on Diastasis Recti or Abdominal Separation:
- Feeling like you still look pregnant months or years after delivery and worried that your “mummy tummy” won’t ever go away no matter what you do?
- Wondering what a diastasis recti even is and have no idea whether you have one (or what to do about it)?
- Feeling discouraged since the birth of your baby, thinking you’ll never be able to get your body back to where it was?
- Confused by all the conflicting information on what you should or shouldn’t do with an abdominal separation or where to even begin with exercise?
- Feeling frumpy and lacking the strength and confidence you want?
- Struggling to keep up with your kids and reach your health and fitness goals?
- Frustrated that other approaches haven’t worked (even if it was another PT) or confused about what to try?
- Are you looking for a long-term and natural solution that will get rid of these problems for good (without medications or surgery)?
- Your doctor says “abdominal separation is totally normal, it will go away on its own”… but weeks and months and years go by and you’re still struggling and just know that something isn’t right in your body.
- Friends tell you to “just do some YouTube workout videos and core classes and you’ll have your abs back in no time” but you end up still feeling weak or in pain.
- Another doctor tells you that “having a Diastasis Recti is just a cosmetic problem” yet your low back and neck pain are telling you otherwise.
- A fellow mom tells you that “this is something that you just get after having babies (like peeing your pants) and there’s not much you can do about it.” (Both of which are not true by the way)
- And now you’re starting to wonder whether getting a tummy tuck or “just dealing with it” are the only options (yikes)?
The Truth Is...
- Resting it doesn’t change anything. For some lucky women right after pregnancy, diastasis recti heals up on its own. For many, however, resting won’t improve it.
- While it’s very common, It’s NOT NORMAL and ignoring it can lead to big time problems down the road. Having an abdominal separation isn’t just cosmetic but can substantially contribute to low back, pelvic and neck pain and urinary incontinence, among other things.
- Physical Therapy can truly help you heal without the need for a surgery (which sometimes makes people worse!)

When It Comes To Solving Diastasis Recti or “Mummy Tummy” Problems and Ensuring a COMPLETE Postpartum Recovery...
You must choose the right provider for your health. If you don’t, you could end up getting surgery (when it could have been avoided) or living with steadily worsening symptoms for the rest of your life.
Getting the “least-invasive”, most natural treatment is VITAL to healing your abdominal separation, building up your core strength, and preventing future injuries like low back or neck pain as a result of ignoring it.
Working with a provider who understands that THE ENTIRE BODY WORKS TOGETHER is vital to your recovery. Our bodies are AMAZING and they go through incredible changes during pregnancy and postpartum periods. We must address the changes in the neck/back/diaphragm/core/pelvic floor/pelvis, posture, breathing, strength, and how we’re using our bodies to fully recover. It’s so much more than doing some “ab work” (which can often make things worse.
To ensure a full recovery, we have to not just treat the symptoms. You must have an expert provider who is willing to get to the ROOT CAUSE of your symptoms and dysfunction. That’s when you’ll get a PERMANENT solution to your diastasis recti.
At Balance Within – Integrative Physical Therapy we’ve created a 3 step process to get rid of your Diastasis Recti and core weakness AND make sure you don’t have to deal with it ever again (YAY!)
Step #1 - We Want To Listen To Your Story
Our medical system is frustrating. You wait weeks, sometimes months, for an appointment, only to get to talk to the doctors for 10 minutes before they have to run to the next patient and you’re left sitting there wondering, “What just happened?”
Even most physical therapy clinics operate this way. They’re not attentive, they’re fast-paced, and your therapist doesn’t have time to learn what goals are important to you, or to work with you one-on-one. That’s why we operate so differently!
And that’s why our first step is to listen to your story.
After successfully working with many women with postpartum issues, we know that no two people are alike. Each person has a different body, a different history, and different types of pain and symptoms.
That is why our first step is to have an open conversation and time for you to tell your story. That way we get a deep understanding of what’s going on not just with your body, but also how it’s impacting your life.
Step #2 - FIND OUT WHAT IS CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS
Many people have a diagnosis or medical term for what’s going on with their bodies. Maybe their doctor gave it to them, maybe tests showed the diagnosis, or maybe you found it online.
Perhaps you’ve been given the label of Diastasis Recti, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, core weakness, Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain or Hip, Back, Pelvic, Neck Pain or Headaches.
You could have been told that your only choice was to rest, give it time or have surgery.
Sometimes, those things bring temporary relief, but they’re not addressing what CAUSED the problem in the first place.
Now granted, we do know part of what caused the Diastasis (pregnancy!) It is entirely normal for the abdominals to separate a bit to allow room for the baby in the third trimester. What we need to figure out is why they have not come back together fully afterward. This has to do with how your muscles are working, firing and coordinating together, posture, strength, and daily habits. Everything we do either helps pull these muscles apart or back together and we have to play detective to fix this.
Every person’s cause of pain or symptoms as a result of these imbalances is different. No one has the exact same problem caused by the exact same thing as another person.
Our goal at Balance Within – Integrative Physical Therapy is to find the original cause of your problem, so not only does your pain go away, it STAYS AWAY!
Step #3 - GET RID OF THE PROBLEM & KEEP IT FROM COMING BACK
This is when the big transformations occur. We develop a personalized plan that allows you to…
…Get back to exercising (yes, even running and jumping!) without fear of weakness, urine leakage, pain, or developing injury.
…Be able to play with your kids, lift, and carry them with no problems!
…Connect with your core in a way you never have to feel strong and powerful with everything you do!
…Get back to the active lifestyle you love (yoga, running, tennis, weight lifting – whatever you love to do!)
…Feel strong, confident, and even sexy again as your body heals from that Diastasis Recti/Abdominal Separation and recovers its core strength fully.
Whatever your frustrations or goals are, please know that healing is possible! Our best clients are those who are motivated and ready to win back their active life. (Even if they feel stuck right now!) We’re here to help when you’re ready.
